KitKat update schedules
We saw Google push the updated AOSP binaries on Thursday, last week. Then Google started pushing the 4.4.4 update OTA to their family of Nexus and Google Play Edition devices. Some Nexus 4, 5, 7, and 10 owners have already received the update and this slow rollout will take another 4-8 weeks until it’s pushed to everyone. Android 4.4.4 is a tiny update and weighs at just 2.5MB for the Nexus family of devices. The size of the update will vary with devices and carriers, but it gives an idea of how tiny the official update is. It’s important to note that, if you’re not a Nexus owner, and are on a carrier like Verizon, you can expect to have a much larger update, because of the large volumes of bloatware some carriers add to their updates.
We’ve heard a representative from Motorola talk about pushing the Android 4.4.3 to their devices. These devices would include the Moto X, Moto G, Moto E and the 2013 DROID lineup. For those who are yet to receive the 4.4.3 update, it seems that your update may be delayed a bit longer than you might have expected it to. Motorola is expecting to push the code to carriers sometime next week; and it’ll take another 3-5 weeks before the update is pushed to the customers.
We know Samsung was working on the 4.4.3 code for their Galaxy S5 device. We imagine they’re going through the same sort of shuffle that Motorola is going through, and we expect the same type of delays for them as well. Depending on how fast they work, we could start seeing the Galaxy S5 updated to Android 4.4.4 by the end of July or by the beginning of August. We will definitely keep you posted as we come by new developments about the update schedule for Android 4.4.4.
