The app, called Job Search, promises to keep your search completely private and not shared with your network.

The new Job Search app for iOS is available in the US only for now and can be downloaded from the Apple app store.

Nokia Unveils 'Z Launcher' for Android 4.1 or Higher Devices.

A Nokia division not owned by Microsoft on Thursday introduced a new Android launcher app called Z Launcher. The Z Launcher app is a limited pre-beta release right now, and is only available via the Z Launcher website, and not via Google Play.
The Nokia Z Launcher app is compatible with smartphones running Android 4.1 or higher, and is not optimised for Android tablets. At present, Nokia is testing the Z Launcher on the Google Nexus 5, Samsung Galaxy S III , Galaxy S4 , andGalaxy S5 . In order to download the launcher app, users will have to sign up with their Google account first.
The Nokia Z Launcher is named after one of its key features that lets user write a letter in order to search for anything directly from the launcher screen. Nokia calls it 'Scribble', a feature that can search anything on the phone "in as little as one second." With Scribble, users just need to draw the first letter of the search and it finds the related app, contact or task.
When the Z Launcher will be installed, users will see the time, date and one upcoming calendar event at the top of the home screen. Just like other launchers, with a tap on time will open Android's clock app and tapping the calendar event will open the Calendar app. Other than that rest of the screen is acquired by few apps, contacts and web pages.
"We're releasing the first version of Z Launcher with a limited number of downloads initially, to see how it works and learn from your feedback. In the next few months we'll provide updates on new versions, features and availability", noted Brook Eaton, Lead Product Manager on Z Launcher's blog.
The Z Launcher app is an independent project by Nokia, free of Microsoft. The company is no longer a cellphone maker as it sold its devices and services business to Microsoft handset for EUR 5.44 billion.

How One App Enabled Entrepreneurship in a Gujarat School.

It's not often that Silicon Valley executives head to a city in Gujarat to see why their app is popular in one school. But when students of S N Kansagra School in Rajkot used Edmodo to manage their annual school bazaar, Ketan Kothari, the app's Vice President Marketing, felt he should visit the school to see how they used the app.
The event - Galaxy Bazaar - encourages commerce students of classes XI and XII to create, purchase and sell products ranging from handicrafts to bikers' accessories. Each student pitches in with Rs. 500 for the capital and like any modern company, all the students take up various roles such as CEO, management, and project leader.
So where does Edmodo come in the picture? Kothari says Edmodo co-founders Nick Borg and Jeff O'Hara started the service to help schoolchildren communicate and collaborate safely.
"Nick Borg and Jeff O'Hara worked in IT departments at local schools in Illinois to block social networking sites being used in the classroom," says Kothari. "That made them think of building a secure social network specifically for the classroom environment that was safe for children." This was something that would serve the needs of the students in SNK School.
Bijal Damani, the social entrepreneurship teacher who is in-charge of Galaxy Bazaar, says the bazaar started in 2005 with 28 students participating. The initiative was a success and by 2009, around 150 students were involved in managing Galaxy Bazaar. "With that many students, coordination had become difficult. The school principal told us about Edmodo (then a Web-based service) and I was among the first teachers in the school to put it to use," Damani says.
The app, which is available on Android and iOS, and the website, allow students to collaborate and plan their work, without the distraction of a bigger network like Facebook.

Students Jeshil Adeshra (CEO of last year's Galaxy Bazaar) and Akshay Kotecha (head of documentation and communication) say they had been using Edmodo for several class projects apart from Galaxy Bazaar. Adeshra felt the app made their work simpler.
"Definitely it [Edmodo] reduced our work load to a huge extent," says Adeshra. "Communicating and collaborating with a huge group and tracking transactions would not have been possible without this platform."
Their batch-mate Abhi Kamdar, who recently cleared his Class XII examination and was the marketing and venue management head for the event, feels Edmodo's mobile apps helped students stay updated.
"For an event like Galaxy Bazaar where we were a team of nearly 120 students, we needed to be in constant contact with our fellow students and juniors to guide them," says Kamdar, "It served as a coordinating platform. so definitely we used Edmodo constantly and got notifications on our mobile phones for updates."
When working with her students, Damani used the app to ensure complete coordination.
"I created several polls for students' opinions and feedback, which reduced my work. We also managed to avoid redundancy," says Damani. "Different students were no longer approaching the same sponsor."
One feature which appealed to the students was that teachers can use the system to award badges for good work.
"My teacher gave me many badges whenever I did wonderful job. She had personalised the badges for different projects. That was so sweet," Adeshra says.
Kotecha, the communication head for last year's Galaxy Bazaar, found Edmodo's polls very useful.
"I liked the poll feature most in Edmodo. It can help teacher or the admin reach a consensus, which in turn helps in decision making," Kotecha says.

Since its inception, Galaxy Bazaar has always generated a profit. The proceeds go towards funding the education of underprivileged students.
"SNK School's fee isn't exactly cheap, so the profit that Galaxy Bazaar generates helps sponsor the education of those who cannot afford education in this school," Damani says.
Although this initiative had a humble beginning, with a profit of just Rs 8,000 in 2005, last year the profit was a whopping Rs 9.24 lakh. Damani says Edmodo has played a vital role in improving students' efficiency. Today, she says, many SNK School teachers encourage students (from as early as class V) to use the app.
Having seen all of this, Edmodo's Kothari was, in his words, "Amazed!" According to him, the Galaxy Bazaar is the kind of use case which has helped the app grow as well. He says that most of the app's growth has been due to word-of-mouth publicity.
India, he adds, is among the top 20 of the 190 countries where Edmodo is used.
"There are still issues related to connectivity and usage of devices (primarily computers and tablets) in India, which is why India isn't in the top 10 yet," says Kothari, adding, "We've seen significant adoption of Edmodo in Uruguay where there was a countrywide initiative to bring connectivity and devices to classrooms. Much of the Edmodo adoption we've seen internationally has been organic, and we are looking to make more targeted efforts to spur engagement in countries like India."
Kothari - an ex-Apple employee - joined Edmodo in 2010, before which he had been working on a project called Root-1 with "two struggling Googlers". Root-1 had coded game-like apps for education, to improve areas such as vocabulary and memory and it is the integration of these technologies that Edmodo is now working on, Kothari said, giving a glimpse of how social media and education could be further integrated in the future.
The students of SNK School have some ideas regarding that. "A live bulletin board, audio message service and live video conferencing facility (like Google Hangouts) will definitely make Edmodo a great tool for education," Adeshra says.

Android, Windows Phones To Get OS Kill Switches.

Google and Microsoft are doing something they've never done before -- incorporating a "kill switch" into the next generation of their mobile  operating systems. Apple already has a kill switch in iOS.

That's significant, considering that Google's Android runs on more than half the smartphones in the U.S. and Microsoft Windows Phone runs on Nokia's handheld devices. The news means that 97 percent of smartphones in the United States will soon have a kill switch, according to New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and San Francisco District Attorney George Gascón.
"The commitments of Google and Microsoft are giant steps toward consumer safety, and the statistics released today illustrate the stunning effectiveness of kill switches," Schneiderman said. "In just one year, the Secure Our Smartphones Initiative has made tremendous strides towards curtailing the alarming trend of violent smartphone theft."
A "kill switch" on a mobile phone allows the owner to remotely disable the phone and erase or block access to personal data  if it is lost or stolen.
Tough on Crime
At its one-year anniversary, the Secure Our Smartphones Initiative is putting out a report chock full of crime stats. For example, after Apple added its kill switch, robberies and grand larcenies involving iPhones dropped dramatically. At the same time, violent crimes against people carrying phones without a kill switch surged.
Entitled, "Secure Our Smartphone Initiative: One Year Later," the report offers never-before-seen data from police departments in New York City, San Francisco and London. In New York, robberies and grand larcenies involving Apple products dropped 19 percent and 29 percent in the first five months of 2014 compared with the year-ago period. Meanwhile, robberies and grand larcenies involving a Samsung smartphone, which did not have a kill switch during much of this time, increased by over 40 percent.
The report offers similar results in San Francisco and London. In San Francisco, for example, iPhone robberies declined 38 percent, while robberies of Samsung devices increased by 12 percent. In London, Apple thefts dropped 24 percent, while Samsung thefts increased 3 percent.
"We can make the violent epidemic of smartphone theft a thing of the past and these numbers prove that," Gascón said. "It was evident from day one that a technological solution was not only possible, but that it would s erve as an effective deterrent to this growing threat . This past year we successfully held the wireless industry's feet to the fire and it's already having an impact for consumers."
Saves Money, Too
Beyond reducing crime, the smartphone kill switch could also save consumers money. Research from Creighton University suggests that the concept, which would make it impossible to resell stolen smartphones, could save consumers $2.6 billion a year. William Duckworth of the Heider College of Business at Creighton, pointed to a recent report from comScore, estimating that more than 145 million Americans carry smartphones. And, he argued, those smartphones make consumers easy targets for theft.
"If the kill switch significantly reduced cell phone theft, consumers could save about $580 million a year from not needing to replace stolen phones and another $2 billion a year by switching from premium cell phone insurance (offered by the wireless carriers) to more basic coverage offered by third parties such as Apple and SquareTrade," Duckworth said. "My research suggests that at least half of smartphone owners would in fact reduce their insurance coverage if the kill switch reduced the prevalence of cell phone theft."
We caught up with Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group, to get his take on the decision from Microsoft and Google to add a kill switch to the next iteration of their mobile operating systems. He's not surprised.
"Cell phone theft has become a serious problem largely because it is trending to become increasingly violent," Enderle told us. "Moves like this potentially destroy the value of stolen phones, which should make people using them, particularly in large cities, far safer."

Android 4.4.4 rolls out to several Nexus devices

Google quietly updates KitKat with security fixes, including one patch for a flaw discovered in OpenSSL after the notorious Heartbleed bug was uncovered.

Even though Android 4.4.3 KitKat has only been out a couple of weeks, Google quietly released an updated version to its operating system on Thursday.
Android 4.4.4 is now available for download on several Nexus devices via theNexus Factory Image page. Those devices listed for the update include the Nexus 4, 5, 7, and 10.
Based on scant information from the Nexus Factory Image page and a Google+ post from Android Engineering Program Manager Sascha Prüter, this new Android 4.4.4 version is fairly minor and basically entails a few security patches. Prüter hinted that the update primarily addresses the CVE-2014-0224 flaw, which wasdiscovered in OpenSSL after the notorious Heartbleed bug was uncovered.
According to Prüter, more information on the update will be available within another 48 hours. It's unclear when Android 4.4.4 will be rolled out to other devices.
Google unveiled Android 4.4.3 earlier this month, which brought an improved dialer with a new interface and more colors designed to be user-friendly. The update also delivered bug fixes, security patches, and overall stability improvements, including a fix aimed at resolving battery drain that occurred with camera use.
